South Gains Through Theatre

By Frederick Philander REHOBOTH The first phase of the Assitej-Namibia (Organization of Theatre for Children and Young People) theatre awareness programme yesterday ended at Rehoboth with a brilliant performance of a self-written play of learners at Dr Lemmer Secondary School. "We feel privileged and honored that Assitej-Namibia has chosen our school to introduce our learners to real youth theatre. We will ever be grateful to the organization for this," said Unice Mosterd, the principal of Dr Lemmer Secondary School yesterday afternoon. The two facilitators of the programme, Richard Swartz and Verdahl Philander, has been working with learners at the school on a daily basis for the past month. "We teach the learners basic acting and theatre writing skills of which natural talent abounds. These learners of this particular school are so talented they should win an Oscar for their natural stage and acting abilities," said chief facilitator and national organizer of Assitej-Nibia, Richard Swartz. He and his colleague have been involved in youth theatre development since last year and will continue next year to help put a national youth theatre structure in place. "We are slowly but surely getting there achieving our aims and objectives to become the sole representatives of youth theatre in this country. It's hard work and we daily face many challenges. Through hard work and dedication we are getting there," said facilitator, Verdahl Philander, who has been with the program for two years now. The program will be shifting to Gibeon with the reopening of the schools in September and from there move to Mariental. "Assitej-Namibia is a truly national organization for youth theatre and should be recognized as such. Hence the fact that we are now in the process of registering the organization with the National Youth Council of Namibia. We are here to stay and have paid our dues in the interest of intellectual stimulation," said Richard Swartz.
