By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK The Chief Executive Officer of NASCAM has recently been elected as an executive member of the newly formed combined Southern and East-African Copyright Network (SEACONET) in Malawi. John Max was unanimously elected during the meeting that was representative of most Southern and East-African countries. SEACONET is an organisation that was established to fight piracy in the 17 affiliated sub-Saharan African countries. Similar organisations already exist in West and Central Africa, The Caribbean, Latin American, The United States, the Nordic Countries, European countries and in Asia. The sub-regional body includes countries such as Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, all present at the launch of SEACONET in Lilongwe at the end of May. A total of six ministers of copyright, arts and culture from affiliated countries also attended the launch of the organisation that will assist the sub-regional governments' ministries on issues related to copyrights and arts and cultural industries, especially on reviewing of arts and culture policy as well as Copyright Acts. SEACONET is poised to come up with a universal approach to fight piracy in the sub-region and to create a regional information database for all artistic and cultural activities. According to Moses Moses, who also attended the Malawi meeting, the delegates had an opportunity to scrutinise the SEACONET constitution, rules and regulations as well as the Strategic Plan I for 2008 to 2013. A democratic election of office bearers was also held.
