ONGWEDIVA - Rivals Swapo and the Rally for Democracy and Progress yesterday seemed to be the only contenders for next month’s by-election at Endola, with the deadline for registration set for today. The by-election, necessitated by the death in August of councillor Ruth Nhinda, is slated for November 7. Nhinda, 59, died on August 10 after a battle with cancer. Swapo regional coordinator in Ohangwena Region, Hafeni Hatutale, and his RDP counterpart, Timo Shikongo, both confirmed they would have their nominees registered with the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) by yesterday afternoon. Swapo nominated Ferdinand Shifidi as candidate, while RDP nominated Hafeni Pius on their ticket. Shifidi was nominated at a district conference held last week Friday. The Swapo Regional Coordinator in Ohangwena Region, Hafeni Hatutale, who is certain of a victory said the party has confidence in their nominated candidate. According to Hatutale, Shifidi served as a branch coordinator at Onepandaulo, as well as secretary, district coordinator, all in the Endola constituency. Others who contested the Swapo nominees list for the by-election include Beatha Haufiku, treasurer for the Endola district and the secretary for the elders’ council, Loide Namhindo. Hatutale said: ”We will do what we did with the Ohangwena by-election, but this time we will do it much better. We cannot go backward, we will definitely move ahead.” Hatutale urged Swapo supporters to come out in numbers to vote for the party in order to maintain peace. Similarly, the RDP Regional Secretary in Ohangwena Region Timo Shikongo in an interview with New Era last week disclosed that the party had nominated Hafeni Pius for the by-election. According to Shikongo, Pius is a branch secretary and a member of the RDP district committee. The ECN’s Returning Officer in Endola, Kerthu Shipoke, told New Era that there were no names tendered with ECN by yesterday morning. Shipoke said that her office was still waiting for political parties to do so during the time left. Registration of nominated candidates ends today shortly before eleven in the morning.
