KATIMA MULILO – MTC Premiership yo-yo team, Rundu Chiefs has made a quick return to top-flight football after the Rundu-based outfit was relegated at the end of last season. Chiefs, who campaigned in the highly competitive North Eastern Division One League, have now in all technicalities made their return to the upper echelons of domestic football after defeating hosts Kingfisher Katima Mulilo last weekend. The visitors netted two unanswered goals against their fellow Premiership hopefuls, who currently occupy second spot on the log standings behind runaway leaders Rundu Chiefs. The Rundu-based outfit cannot be caught by any of their challengers for the title, as they are now seating 11 points clear on the summit ahead of second-placed Kingfishers. Despite playing away from the famous Rundu Sports Stadium, Chiefs under coach John Sikerete, went into the match needing only a draw to secure a quicker than expected return to the country’s flagship league. Chiefs were the dominant team in the North East Fist Division throughout the entire season following their whirlwind romance with the NPL last year that saw them being relegated at the end of the 2014 season. “Epangelo”, as Rundu Chiefs are known by their ardent supporters, scored two goals in the first half through midfielder Katjukua Vasekua in the 27th minute after skilful midfielder played through a side line pass through the advancing goalkeeper after neat passing between the Chiefs players. Eleven minutes later, it was Horaseb Barnard’s turn to register his name on the score sheet making it 2-0 for the visitors. The victory all but sealed promotion to the elite league while it also confirmed Chief’s dominance in the league, after suffering demotion on two previous occasions. “Epangelo” keep bouncing back to the elite league despite average performance in the national super league. Although revered in the North Eastern Football Division as an enterprising unit, Chiefs, who have in the past produced great players such as current Brave Warriors mercurial midfielder Petrus “Dancing Shoes” Shitembi, always tend to find the goings tough in the elite league – often only lasting a season before making a quick retreat to familiar territory.
