Windhoek Rundu-based MTC Premiership outfit Julinho Sporting yesterday shocked all and sundry when the club amassed the most public votes for a place in the 2015 edition of the Dr Hage Geingob Cup. The prestigious competition is to be held on July 23-25 at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek. The competition’s votes were announced at yesterday’s press briefing in Windhoek, where Julinho Sporting emerged victorious after shaking off unwanted attention from various league giants led by Black Africa, Orlando Pirates, Tigers and Tura Magic – to take up the only remaining spot in the four-team fixture list of the tournament. Julinho received 30 664 votes out of a total of 57 636 votes cast between June 11 and July 13. In 2nd place was Tura Magic which received 14 231 votes, while Tigers took 3rd place after bagging 7 420 votes. Young Chiefs finished in 4th place with 2 983 votes, Black Africa came in 5th place with 1 003 votes, while Orlando Pirates completed the top six line-up with 902 votes. Last year, the competition amassed 17 955 votes in total. Julinho Sporting commercial director Daniel Tjongarero said credit should go to the team’s supporters and their active participation on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. “We are a young and hungry team that look forward to making our first appearance. Our engagement with our supporters on social media paid off. It will be a great platform for our players to gain the needed exposure and we will make sure to fully utilise this chance as a springboard to prepare the team for the upcoming season,” said Tjongarero. The second edition of the Dr Hage Geingob Cup, presented by Windhoek Draught, MTC and Namibia Airports Company (NAC) will kick off at 17h30 on Thursday, July 23 when African Stars take on Julinho Sporting, while at 19h00 defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns face Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto. Action will conclude on Saturday with the final at 17h00, while at 15h00 the losers from day one will fight for third and fourth places. There will also be a curtain raiser between a Former Brave Warriors Select side and a Parliamentarians and Diplomats Select side. Entrance tickets are on sale on Computicket for N$20 each. Local clubs African Stars and Julinho Sporting will be given N$350 000 each as appearance fees.
