Pohamba blames domestic violence on lack of education

Elambo Former president Hifikepunye Pohamba believes uneducated men form the majority of perpetrators of domestic violence and intimate relationship killings. He made the comment last week when delivering the keynote address at the circuit awards ceremony for Onkumbula in Eengodi Constituency, Oshikoto Region. “The majority of men that are involved in passion killings and domestic violence are the ones that are not educated,” Pohamba, Namibia’s president between 2005 and 2015, said. “Therefore children, you must take education seriously to avoid getting involved in illicit behaviour.” Pohamba said knowledge and critical thinking are key imperatives in the collective endeavour to build an inclusive and prosperous country. “I encourage all learners in this circuit, and the country at large, to work harder and with greater dedication. Through hard work, all of you will excel,” said Pohamba. Pohamba further urged learners to emulate the good example of those who passed their exams with flying colours and thereby make academic excellence the hallmark of education in the country. The former president commended the teachers and management of Onkumbula circuit for their hard work and support they provide to learners. “Excellent performance is a result of commitment and dedication by all stakeholders. It is a demonstration that a clear focus on stated goals will produce the desired results,” he said. In terms of regional ranking, Onkumbula is one of the best circuits in Oshikoto Region and received the national award for being the best overall. According to the deputy regional education director Vilho Shipuata, Onkumbula had four JSC centres in 2014 and all recorded a pass rate of 50% and above. “Six schools in Oshikoto Region recorded a 100% pass rate in 2014 and Elambo Combined School, which is in Onkumbula circuit, had 42 learners who all passed Grade 10,” revealed Shipuata.
