Windhoek Prominent Windhoek-based lawyer, Patrick Kauta is the new chairman of reigning Namibia premiership champions, African Stars, a well-placed source within the club confirmed to New Era Sport yesterday. Kauta replaces local business mogul, Sidney Martin, who parted ways with the club towards the end of last season after being at the helm of the club since the 2008/2009 MTC Premiership season. “Yes it’s true, Kauta was recently appointed as new chairman of African Stars, along with other board members led by Welcome Kazondunge, who is the new vice-chairman. The directors are Sieggie Veii-Mujoro, Brian Makari and Mbakumua Hengari. We have faith in the new leadership and hope they can take the club to greater heights,” said the source. “Our objective this coming season is to retain the league trophy and keep the team as strong as possible, and the new leadership has indicated their intension to contribute to that effort, so I really have to say everything looks bright at the moment”. Kauta is no newcomer to football, particularly to Stars, as he has been one of the club’s shareholders for the past couple of years. He is widely recognized for his pivotal role in Stars’ marathon court case against the Namibia Premier League (NPL) following the club’s expulsion from the league last year. Under Kauta’s legal guidance, Stars were thrown a lifeline to return to the country’s topflight league after the Namibia Football Association Appeal Committee auspiciously overruled the expulsion. The glamorous Katutura club is set to contest for top honours in the popular Dr Hage Geingob Cup tomorrow when they take on Julinho Sporting, one of the main clashes at the Windhoek Independence Stadium, while defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns will engage Angolan club, Premeiro de Agosto in the other main encounter for a place in Saturday’s final.
