State rubbishes allegations of hunt for land activists

Ongwediva The Minister of Safety and Security (Rtd) Major General Charles Namoloh has dismissed as fake an audio recording being circulated by a prominent businessman that claims the state wants the residential addresses of three northern-based land activists. In the phoney audio recording the businessman claims Affirmative Reposition (AR) regional coordinators in Ondangwa, Oshakati and Ongwediva are being targeted. The audio recording whose authenticity was dismissed by Namoloh implies state security agents are after the three northern land activists. The businessman whose name was given to New Era also claims in the audio recording that he was tasked by state security to help track down land activists in Ondangwa, Oshakati and Ongwediva. The recording has apparently enraged many people in northern Namibia who vented their outrage through social media where they called the implicated businessman a traitor and a sellout. Namoloh indicated that the state is there to protect every citizen hence it has no reason to hunt the trio. “We don’t know such things and there cannot be such things. There is no law to just arrest anybody. What have they done?” asked Namoloh. Namoloh dismissed the recording as pure rumours that certain individuals are circulating to create chaos, fear and despondency among citizens. “We are not involved, those are provocative, or maybe those who are spreading the rumours are the ones who want to provoke the situation. The state knows nothing about that,” stressed Namoloh. Peter Shindingeni the AR coordinator in Ongwediva, revealed they have laid a complaint with the Oshana police. Shindingeni further questioned how a businessman could get involved with the affairs of state security. “What state security is this that cannot keep secrets? We know state security and we know how they operate, so maybe this is a new leaf,” remarked Shindingeni. Meanwhile the concerned businessman who cannot be named at this stage denied being the author of the audio recording. Head of Police Operations in Oshana, Deputy Commissioner Karel Theron confirmed there was a person who came to the police to give information on the issue. Commissioner Theron said the police were investigating the matter.
