No effort will be spared to fight poverty – Kameeta

Keetmanshoop All possible ways and means will be harnessed in the fight against poverty, says the Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare Zephania Kameeta Addressing a large crowd at the commemoration of World Population Day at the J. Stephanus stadium in Keetmanshoop on Friday, Kameeta strongly emphasised that his ministry will use everything at its disposal to root out poverty in the country. He said the ministry would do its utmost to free women, men, the elderly and children from abject and dehumanizing conditions of poverty, adding that the ministry is committed to make the right to development a reality for everyone. “We are not going to sit down on things that need to be done, we have chairs to sit on,” he added. Kameeta said he looks forward to engage the leadership of //Kharas Region on pertinent issues around poverty eradication, especially the empowerment of women and youth. He added that poverty is largely skewed towards women and the youth and it’s therefore imperative to find ways to empower them to rise from their circumstances and make meaningful contributions to development. Kameeta further expressed his confidence that //Kharas Regional Governor Lucia Basson will join hands with his ministry to fight poverty, saying that selfless leadership is instrumental in the fight as opposed to leaders who care only about themselves. “We need leaders who are not concerned with titles and positions but excited to lead,” he urged fellow leaders present at the event. He further called for more investment in the young population especially in vocational training and skills development so that they can take their destiny in their own hands, as well as investment in the health of young people with regard to reproductive health and their general rights, towards eradicating teenage pregnancy. The event was commemorated under the theme ‘Vulnerable populations in emergencies’ and drew a large crowd to the stadium despite the cold windy weather.
