Six dead still unnamed

Windhoek The names of the six people who died in a car accident on Sunday evening on the Otjiwarongo- Okahandja road were still not known yesterday. According to the Otjozondjupa Regional Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha, the police were waiting for the next of kin to identify the remains of the deceased. The accident, which involved three vehicles – two pickups and a SUV – took place on the notorious B1 road, 33 kilometres between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo. Mbeha said that of the six people who died, one occupant in the pickup was burnt beyond recognition after the vehicle burst into flames. She said those who perished include two children and four adults. “Ten people were injured. Injuries range from slight to serious,” Mbeha said. She said the two pickups were travelling from the direction of Otjiwarongo and the one pickup overtook the other and collided with a SUV travelling from Okahandja. She said the pickup being overtaken was also involved in the crash. Mbeha said there were altogether 16 people in the three vehicles but the police had not yet established how many occupants were in each car. Mbeha warned drivers to be vigilant and not to overtake on blind spots, in reference to the accident in which the driver overtook in the face of an oncoming vehicle.
