Youth unemployment up by 4.2 percent

There were about 332 970 unemployed youths in 2013, which is 4.2 percent higher than the 295 492 unemployed young people registered in 2012. The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), in a report issued this week, attributes the increase to the lack of skills, a skills mismatch and an unstable labour market due to structural changes. “The empirical analysis suggests that over-education is a sign of market failure or structural macroeconomic bottlenecks in the economy,” the report says.
