Missing German visitors found dead

Windhoek Two German visitors who went missing on Thursday last week were found dead in the Fish River Canyon yesterday morning. The two as yet unidentified nationals, who died while on holiday in Namibia were mother and daughter. //Karas Regional Commander Johannes Tsuseb confirmed the incident and said the bodies were found at 10h50 yesterday in the Fish River Canyon near a hiking point. He said the bodies were still at the scene, as the police were busy conducting investigations. Tsuseb said he cannot release the names of the victims yet, as their next of kin have not yet been informed, but confirmed that the mother was born in 1968 and her daughter in 1987. He said the bodies were found after searching the area by foot and by means of helicopter. In a press statement issued by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), Mufaro Nesongano said the two German nationals are known to NWR, but their names cannot be released. “The two nationals made their booking at one of the local lodges within the area of the Canyon in order to have easy access to the hikers’ drop-off point at Hobas,” Nesongano said. He added that over the past two days the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, along with local lodge employees where the German tourists were staying, have been searching the area to try and locate them. NWR managing director Zelna Hengari earlier said on their part they availed the services of E-Med rescue to assist in locating the missing tourists. The Fish River Canyon draws thousands of tourists each year, but Hengari said it is as yet unclear why the German nationals chose this time of the year to visit the canyon, as it is closed to all members of the public due to the extreme weather conditions that can be experienced at this time of the year. The incident came to light three days after three French tourists, who were reported missing, were found near the Kuiseb River on Monday last week. The Rossignol family were reported missing in the Erongo Region while on an excursion and drove to the Kuiseb River for a view of the landscape. They deflated the Toyota Hilux’s tyres for a smooth drive in the sand, which later created problems.
