Rundu Sixty orphans and vulnerable children, who are learners at Shimpanda Primary School 20 km south of Rundu and at Karangana Primary School 40 km west of Rundu, received full school uniforms, including shoes and socks last week. The donation, which was handed over to the kids on Thursday, came from the profit derived from the first colour party event that took place in Rundu in December last year. The school uniforms were valued at N$13 000. “We know that a school uniform is a basic need for learners and the ones we gave them to are orphans and vulnerable children who struggle… so we thought of buying it for them. We could only manage to afford few, but we plan on doing it on a yearly basis. “They say charity begins at home, so we don’t have to wait for other people to come and do it for us,” said one of the organisers, Gerharda Sihova, who is also a school teacher. “Organising the event was a headache, but we managed to pull it off and it was well attended. We had close to 1000 people, who showed up and for a first-time event that was a success,” Shihova said. She further told New Era that the idea of organising the colour party event was first mentioned by her friend, Juzette Muxinga, who is also one of the organisers. “So we organised ourselves with Virino Sasikela and got Jerry Kauyu and Hafeni Namwira to assist us in promoting the event. “After sitting down with Juzette’s idea we thought, ‘Yes why don’t we organise the first colour party for Rundu since it has only been hosted at other places, and we thought of making it a charity event,” she said. “We didn’t want to donate to a specific charity organisation, because many established charity organisations out there already get way too much attention from different sponsors. That’s why we felt that there are those orphans and vulnerable children out there who suffer in silence and they have got nowhere to turn to. Those are the ones we felt should benefit from this fund raising event,” she said. The event was sponsored by local companies from Rundu, namely Armstrong Construction, Omashare River Lodge, New World Pub, Otja Trading, Atlantic Oceano Super Market and Andysol.
