Postmortem to be conducted on Germans who died in canyon

Windhoek The remains of two German nationals who were found dead in the Fish River Canyon last week after the two reportedly went missing were on Sunday sent for a postmortem. Deputy Commissioner Rudolf Julius Isaak, the regional crime investigation coordinator in the //Karas Region, informed New Era about this development on Monday, saying that the German Embassy will take over the process. He could not say when the bodies would be repatriated to Germany. The two German nationals - a 47-year-old woman and her 28-year-old daughter who allegedly came to Namibia to collect the cremated remains of two family members who had died in a car crash in December - were reported missing earlier this month in the Fish River Canyon and were eventually found after several days. It is not clear exactly how the two died, but there was widespread media speculation over the past week that they may have committed suicide. Their bodies were found near Hikers’ Point, located about 500 metres from the outlook point at the Fish River Canyon. It is believed that the two women had stayed overnight at Hikers’ Point, as their belongings were found in the bathroom facilities at the site. Namibian Sun reported last week that the two women had spent a few days in Windhoek before they headed south, where they booked into the Canyon Village Lodge near the Fish River Canyon. They arrived at the Canyon Village in the first week of January and intended to stay for a few days. Their bags, containing personal documents, food, drinks, and a large amount of local and European currency, were found in a bush near the look-out point, it was reported. It was further reported that a suicide note was found among their belongings, but the police have not made the contents of the note public. For reasons as yet unclear the police have also not released the names of the two women.
