Windhoek A rejuvenated new look Wanderers netball side the White Mares, as the team is affectionately known amongst its ardent followers, recorded a rare clean sweep over eternal rivals Trustco United in the fiercely contested annual derby between the two old foes at the Trustco netball courts in Olympia on Saturday. The Pionierspark outfit came out tops with three wins from the four matches contested between the two fierce rivals. The highly charged up White Mares opened their assault in the one-day tourney with a victory, when their third strings narrowly edged ahead of United by 23 goals to 22, while the second strings duly obliged by returning the compliment with a 27-23 triumph. The visitors’ first team was not to be outdone either and saw off the hosts by 29 baskets to 24 in an action packed encounter where no quarter was asked or given. However, the hosts got some consolation when their golden oldies team defeated the White Mares veteran side by 25 baskets to 23 for a face-saving victory in a closely contested encounter that had the appreciative crowd on the edge of their seats for the better part of the gruelling clash of the titans. Surprisingly, Wanderers appear to have adopted a different approach with the previously conservative club having shifted away from its old tradition of fielding lily-white squads. The White Mares have wisely recruited a significant number of players from across the colour line with former youth international, the gorgeous Uazuva ‘Zuzu’ Mieze, Mennethe Nguvauva (both formerly with Civics) and the former African Stars pair of Toko Tjipetekera and cat-footed versatile attacking player Tjaa Kavari among the new arrivals. The quartet played a pivotal role in Wanderers’ sudden upsurge, injecting the missing ingredients in an otherwise star-studded squad and gelling quickly with the team’s customary direct style of play, which places lots of emphasis on technique, tactics and basics. Judging by the team’s near faultless display and newly found credentials, only a fool would bet against the White Mares not returning to their old winning culture and dominating the domestic netball scene for years to come when the season starts in earnest.
