Our Star of the Week is the only Namibian Associate Dean at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust), Dr Anicia Peters. Currently, there are very few female Namibians with doctoral degrees (PhDs) in computer sciences and there is a need to empower Namibians to obtain PhDs and take up positions in this field. She is a former Fullbright scholar and has numerous accolades to her name. She hopes to encourage other young women and Namibians in general to gain credible academic qualifications, so they can compete with the best in the world. Peters is the first and only Namibian associate dean at the university and heads the Faculty of Computing and Informatics. She is living proof that every person, no matter their starting-point can lead, if given an opportunity. * This section, which recognises important newsmakers who have made a positive contribution to our society and have featured in the news during the week, appears in New Era every Friday.
