Oshakati Eengendjo Secondary School overpowered traditional rivals Ruacana High School to claim the 13th edition of the annual Old Mutual Far North Football Championship in a high-scoring final at the Oshakati Independence Stadium on Saturday. The team from Kunene showed more hunger, displaying their customary tiki-taka football, notably in extra time as the teams were deadlocked at 3-all after regulation time. However, all their efforts were thwarted by the agility coupled with sheer bravey of the Eengendjo shot stopper, who single-handedly kept his school in the game with some breathtaking saves – much to the delight of the appreciative crowd. Ruacana thought they had taken a well-deserved lead – only for the goal to be disallowed for an offside deep into extra time. The two schools had to ruffle their own feathers from the dreaded spot kicks (penalties) to determine the overall winner. Victory Haupindi’s last spot kick sent the Oshakati Independence Stadium into raptures as Eegendjo converted all five spot kicks with Rucana missing one of their allocated five penalties. In the netball division, Haundano Secondary School defeated Uukule Senior Secondary School by 24 baskets to 22 in the final to clinch first prize. The overall winners in both the football and netball discilines each scooped a handsome amount of N$5 000, a floating trophy, photocopier, gold medals, Old Mutual-branded T-shirts and a variety of sports equipment. The runners-up were the proud recipients of a consolation prize of N$3 000, a computer, silver medals and sports equipment, with the third placed team walking away with N$2 000, bronze medals, a fax machine and sports equipment. The fourth placed team received a consolation prize of N$1 000 and a set of playing gear. The competition was proudly sponsored by Old Mutual Namibia in partnership with other companies, such as Business Connexion, OTB Sports and Waltons Stationery. schools-action
