NPL action only early next year... as financial crisis persists

Windhoek - Divergent from the expectations of many - and sadly so - Namibians should only expect to consume premiership football early next year and not this year as many had hoped, the Namibia Premier League (NPL) headship has made known. Namibians across all bends and curves of the country waited with bated breath for a positive outcome from Saturday’s ordinary annual general meeting (AGM) held at Football House in Katutura, where the NPL’s leadership and clubs adopted a number of resolutions. Amongst the various resolutions taken on Saturday, the NPL’s leadership finally came clean and decided not to further sell false hopes to football action-starved Namibians - thus deciding to only kick off with league activities for the 2016/2017 season in February next year once the entire needed N$24 million is secured. So far the league only has the moot three-year N$3 million sponsorship from Groot Systems (Pty) Ltd, owned by controversial businessman Simon Kapenda - meaning the league still needs about N$21 million to reach its N$24 million budget. Also at the weekend’s AGM, which was attended by 14 of the 16 league clubs, the NPL welcomed its three new entrants to the league, namely Chief Santos, Young African and Life Fighters, however Young African and Life Fighters were both granted conditional membership until they pay in full their registration fees. Both clubs were given until close of business on Wednesday, November 16, to make payment. The AGM also approved the league’s audited annual financial statements of the 2015/2016 season and subsequently the N$24 million budget of the 2016/2017 season, and also resolved to reappoint its current audit firm, Saunderson & Co. for another term in accordance with the NPL constitution. It was also communicated that an extraordinary annual general meeting be convened in January 2017, where the NPL will review and adopt its draft constitution.
