Khomastura launches character-building programme

As part of the commitment to empowering young girls in school through sanitation and hygiene, the Khomastura High School boys’ club in collaboration with the School of Destiny Associates (SODA) has launched a movement called the ‘We care’ programme.

The programme, launched on Friday is aimed at character building on values such as responsibility and self-worth.

“It’s a demonstration of social solidarity, an intervention which attempts to understand the plight of the girl child,” said the Chief Executive Officer of SODA, Sidney Boois.

Supporting the motion tabled by the deputy minister of information, Emma Theofelus seeking for amendment of tax laws that will allow for imposing tax exemption on all menstrual hygiene products, Boois said the motion signals both growth of the democracy and safeguarding of the rights of all Namibians.

“Article 8 of our constitution which calls respect for human dignity, seems still just letters and idle in respect of the girl child who loses at least five school days per month due to their menstruation cycle, which short changes them of education as an equal opportunity with the boy child,” he said.

Boois further said the boys’ club pioneered as an activist for social change by creating a support system around their school community.

Speaking at the same event, the chairperson of the boys’ club, Waldo Esau encouraged other boys to support girls around the school.

“The girls can count on us to ensure lack of sanitary pads at this school will be a problem of the past,” he said.

Esau added: “Let us show our girls/sisters the love which we show to our sisters at home. Let us do this by caring for their health. Let us help them to feel proud and dignified. Each one who donated a pad, you are a true hero.”

Khomastura High School has joined other schools such as Ella Du Plessis Secondary School and Schmelenville Combined School that have created the same initiative earlier this year.
