Learner released after dagga arrest

RUNDU - A 16-year-old learner who was arrested at Ndiyona Combined School hostel for possession of cannabis, was released in the care of his guardian when he appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The learner, who appeared on charges of possession of dependence producing substance, is in grade nine.

He was arrested on Sunday afternoon after he was caught by a hostel superintendent with cannabis in a plastic bag. The value was yet to be evaluated and determined.

According to the police, it was reported that the accused allegedly left the hostel premises without the consent or permission of the superintendent or any hostel official and later returned with the parcel, which they recognised as cannabis.

The school then reached out to the police who are located next to the school.

The suspect, who cannot be named as he is underaged, appeared before magistrate Selma Shiinga while public prosecutor Michael Munika represented the State in the matter. His case was remanded to 4 April for screening.
