Residents of Ombili were left in shock yesterday after NamPower employee Abner Shiimi shot himself in front of his neighbours after he was allegedly charged and fined N$1 000 for causing damage to a company vehicle when he bumped a taxi.

According to the police, the deceased committed suicide as he shot himself with his pistol in the head in his yard.

The police said the deceased was charged on Tuesday, 28 June 2022, for failure to ascertain damages after an accident as he was driving the company’s vehicle.

“The deceased was identified as  Abner Shiimi, a 56-year-old employee of NamPower. The family were informed of his death. The deceased bumped a taxi and caused damage to that vehicle as well as to the NamPower vehicle. He then drove away, and went to park the vehicle without reporting to his supervisor,” explained Khomas police spokesperson Silas Shipandeni.

He said an investigation was carried out, and the man was arrested on 28 June, charged and issued a J534 for an amount of N$1 000 for failure to ascertain damages after an accident. A J534 is a written notice to appear in court if one opts not to pay the amount stipulated therein, which is given in the form of a traffic fine.

He is survived by his wife and their four daughters.
