Mother suspected of baby dumping arrested

Investigations conducted around Okahao town led to the apprehension of a 34-year woman, believed to be the mother of the baby dumped last week.

The body of a baby boy was found at the Uukwalumbe village dumping site in the Okahao Constituency on Friday at around 13h00.

It is alleged that an unknown suspect killed the child, estimated to be around three weeks old, placed the body in a plastic bag and threw it in a dustbin.

The plastic bag was discovered by local people who scavenge for used items at the dumpsite.

According to the Omusati regional police Commissioner Titus Shikongo, preliminary investigations indicate the suspect was pregnant and gave birth privately in her room on 23 December 2021 at Okahao.

“Further investigations also disclosed that the suspect thereafter stayed with the baby boy in the room until the 7th January, the day on which the body was discovered,” said Shikongo.

The suspect is originally from Onawa village in the Anamulange Constituency.

The woman, a general worker at a school, is detained at Okahao Police Station, and was taken to Okahao State Hospital for treatment and further examinations.

She will appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court today.

The police applauded members of the public, including the media, for the timely assistance of information.
