Ongwediva inaugurates new junior council

Victoria Kaapanda

The Ongwediva Town Council on Tuesday saw the swearing-in of Teofilus Shaduka, a learner at the Gabriel Taapopi Secondary School, as the new junior mayor.

He was sworn in with 20 other new members of the junior town council, including Anna Ashipala from the Mweshipandeka Secondary School as his deputy.
Members of the council are drawn from various schools within the boundaries of Ongwediva, and serve for a period of two years.

In his acceptance speech at the eighth inauguration ceremony, Shaduka said they want to focus on issues affecting the lives of young people in Ongwediva.

“This doesn’t simply mean that we plan on having talks addressing these issues, but we instead want to tackle them first, to the best of our abilities. We will address these issues without fear and hesitation,” he promised.

Shaduka said that is the only way education will be profitable and the needs of the Namibian child met. He added that he is well-aware that this position comes with great responsibility, and needs determination, sacrifice and hard work, and he is willing to take on all these. While promising to be a great leader, Shaduka explained that being part of the leadership is a task that they have been given to be the voice of fellow young people.
