Ongwediva street upgrading stalls as contractor dodges

Ongwediva Town Council has terminated the contract of Neu Olulya Trading cc, which was contracted to upgrade the town’s Church Street to bitumen standard with immediate effect.

Ongwediva Town Council spokesperson Jackson Muma in a statement said the project was awarded in November 2020 and scheduled for eight months.

Until April 2021, no significant progress is being made, despite numerous communications addressed to the contractor.

“The contractor has also failed on several occasion to attend site meetings, which are crucial to track progress. It is worthy that the delay has compromised the projected completion period and does not conform to standards and values of Ongwediva Town council and its residents,” said Muma.

Church Street is approximately 1.6 km long and the contract was worth N$6.3 million.

Muma says Church Street is expected to connect institutions to important services in town, hence council’s decision to upgrade it.

“Council wishes to assure the residents and house owners at extensions 6, 7, and partly 8 that it will restart the bidding process in due course to get the project done, although with an extended period,” he added.

Muma said Council shall continue to act in the best interest of the public through provision of quality service and at no point will it intent to compromise the set standard.

Attempts to get hold of the owner of Neu Olulya Trading cc for his side of the story proved futile.
