Pavlov on the rise

Aletta Shikololo

After the break-up of the once-popular dance group Morango Crew where he was the lead dancer, Pavlov has become a formidable force on the local music scene, particularly after the release of his debut album ‘Keys’.

VIBEZ! caught up with the dancer-turned-musician to find out how he is manoeuvring his way to the top.

Born Joao da Silva, Pavlov has been in the making for a while, and is now ready to rocket through the charts.

“Despite the challenges that come with rebranding as an artist, I have remained consistent with my work, and I believe I have worked hard enough to be where I am right now,” he explained.

Without a doubt, a unique and forward-thinking artist at the forefront of a new generation of dancehall/Afro-pop artists emerging from Namibia, Pavlov recently released his second studio album titled ‘Free spirit’, which is currently making waves on local radio stations.

Asked what inspired the trending album, he revealed that ‘Free spirit’ is a tribute to his brother, who died two years ago.

“The death of my brother made me work even harder. I made this album to show him my appreciation. I was connected to him in many ways; he was one of the best people in my life,” he said sadly.

‘Free spirit’ is a 12-track album that features some household names in Namibian music, including Bobby WDK, Bones Yamukongo and Nga-I.

The collaborations were carefully picked, and give an organic addition, tailored to each track.

About the separation of the Morango crew, Pavlov clarified that there is no bad blood among the five brothers, and they have taken different career paths.

“After my crew members left to Angola, I decided to rebrand ‘Morango crew’ from a dancing group to a record label. I have signed one local artist by the name of De3zy Pokololo, and I am still scouting for other talents,” he added.

The 'Free spirit' album is available on all digital platforms.
