Pensioner rape accused denied bail

RUNDU -  A man accused of raping an 85-year-old woman at Sharukwe village in Ncuncuni constituency, Kavango West, was denied bail when he appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Vasco Ngongo (32) on Saturday 1 January at 02h00 at Sharukwe village, Kavango West Region, allegedly dug a hole through the victim’s sleeping room, gained entry into the room and overpowered the victim and forcefully had unprotected sexual intercourse with her against her consent.

The case was remanded to 5 April, for further investigations and for the accused to apply for legal aid. Bail is opposed on the basis that it will not be in the interest of justice.

The court advised the accused of his rights to formally apply for bail.

“I want to address the court,” Ngongo said during his court appearance.

“Proceed,” said magistrate Mufana. “I was assaulted by the grandson and daughter of the victim on Tuesday and I was not taken to the hospital, I want to be taken to the hospital,” Ngongo noted. The police were informed by the court to ensure that the accused was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Prosecutor Variety Matamata represented the State in the matter while Barry Mufana presided.
