Soldier allegedly commits suicide

Rundu – A 36-year-old member of the Namibian Defence Force allegedly committed suicide on Friday afternoon by shooting himself with a private pistol at the Grootfontein Military Base in the Otjozondjupa region.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s spokesperson in the region Maureen Mbeha told Nampa on Saturday that the deceased was identified as 36-year-old David Ndeutapo Shikwetepo.
“Shikwetepo was a corporal by rank in the NDF, and died on the spot at the army base,” she said.
He allegedly shot himself once in the head at the barracks of the military’s special forces at about 12h00 on Friday afternoon.
His close relatives were informed about his death on the same Friday afternoon, added Mbeha.
The deceased did not leave behind any suicide note, and no foul play is suspected.
An inquest docket into the matter was opened at the Grootfontein police station.

Still in Grootfontein, the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after Namibian Peter Isai Lamberd, aged 60, died on the spot after he lost control over the Toyota Land Cruiser he was driving, and it overturned on the B8 road, some 10km from Grootfontein towards Rundu on Saturday at 11h00.

Lamberd was allegedly travelling alone. “The next of kin have been informed, and police investigations continue,’’ stated the police.

Meanwhile at Tsumkwe, the police are investigating a case of murder after an adult man died after being assaulted by a ‘jealous boyfriend’ of the woman he was allegedly found with at a drinking hole at midnight on Sunday at the Tsumkwe settlement.

“It is alleged that an adult male between the ages of 40 and 45 sustained severe injuries, and subsequently succumbed to his injuries after he was kicked by a 59-year-old Namibian male suspect,’’ said the police.

“It is further alleged that the suspect did not find his girlfriend at home, but found her with the victim at a shebeen.

“He then started blaming the deceased for taking his girlfriend away from home, before he started kicking him,” the police explained.

The suspect was arrested.
