Suicides rock first week of 2023

 A man, whose identity is unknown, allegedly shot and killed himself with a 7.65 millimetre pistol near the Ondangwa police station on Wednesday. 

According to the Namibian Police’s report, the deceased, a 51-year-old Namibian truck driver, allegedly shot himself at 13h58 near the parking bay of the police station after parking his truck. 

The report said the deceased, who hails from the Oneshoko village in the Oshana region, was rushed to Onandjokwe State Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. 

The motive for the alleged suicide is unknown, and police investigations continue. 

The Namibian Police are also investigating various cases after five people lost their lives on New Year’s eve and on New Year’s Day. 

A 72-year-old man was the first person to be reported dead on the first day of the year after he shot himself with a pistol while sitting on a chair under a tree. 

According to the crime report, Simeon Iilende ended his life on Sunday, 1 January 2023 at about 10h15 at a house in Onayeluka village, Outapi constituency in the Omusati region. 

Another person who allegedly ended her life was a 57-year-old female residing at Frankie Abrahams Street, Kuisebmond in Walvis Bay. She was found hanging in her room by a family member who last saw her the day before the incident. 

No foul play is suspected. She was identified as Loini Shiimi, and her next of kin were informed. 

On Saturday at about 11h00 at Donkerhoek location, Khorixas, a one-year-old was playing outside the house while his mother was busy inside the house, and when the mother was allegedly called by the children who were passing by in the street, she found her child already drowned in a 20-litre container which had water and clothes inside. 

The child was declared dead by doctors. 

In Wanaheda on Saturday at about 10h45 at Obama Street, a 28-year-old man died instantly after he was allegedly stabbed with a knife by a suspect whom he had an argument with. 

The police alleged that the suspect and the deceased were having an argument and in the process, the suspect stabbed the deceased first on his finger when the deceased was trying to grab the knife from the suspect. 

Thereafter, the suspect stabbed the deceased again on the right side of the chest, and he died on the spot. The suspect, 24-year-old Mckentyre Wesley Mate was arrested. 

The deceased is Raymond Uirab, residing at Sinagoge Street, Dolam location. The next of kin were informed. 

AtKatimaMulilo, aZimbabwean man aged 47 was found hanging from a tree. The incident occurred on Saturday at Macaravani West, behind Katima Mulilo NaTIS. On him was his passport, and it was established that he came to Namibia through the Ngoma border post on 29 December 2022. 

The body was taken to Katima Mulilo mortuary and the deceased’s next of kin were not yet notified. No foul play was suspected.
