Top cop’s fuel theft case struck off court roll

RUNDU – The case against a senior police officer who was arrested in April last year for allegedly stealing 20 litres of state fuel, was last Tuesday struck off the court roll due to a pending decision from the office of the prosecutor general.

The court has since last year been waiting for a decision from the prosecutor general (PG) on whether to prosecute the policeman for the charges against him, but the PG has still not responded to give instructions on the way forward.

Detective chief inspector Hendrick Mukubesa Mulele (53) allegedly filled up a 20-litre container at the Rundu charge office’s fuel station while refuelling his official vehicle, and did not record the transaction in the official register. CCTV footage showed how the police officer helped himself to government fuel for his personal use.

Mulele was charged with corruption, alternatively theft and fraud, and granted bail of N$1 700 last year. The container of fuel was recovered.

He appeared before Rundu magistrate Selma Shiiga then.

The bail order was cancelled, and an order was made that the bail money is refunded to the depositor.

Mulele was represented by Rundu-based lawyer Bernhard Tjatjara, while prosecutor Michael Munika represented the State in the matter.
