Namibia bags more medals at Youth Games

LESOTHO - Namibian swimmers yesterday maintained their rich vein of form when they scooped three more medals to further extend the country’s medal tally at the ongoing AUSC Region 5 Youth Games in Maseru, Lesotho.

Team Namibia had earlier on Monday bagged three bronze medals in the butterfly, freestyle medley relay and the mixed medley relay swimming events.

Determined as they were on Monday, Namibian swimmers yesterday refused to slow down when they again showed great dominance in the waters to clinch one gold, one silver and one bronze medals.

Nicole Redecker won the country’s first gold medal at the competition in the women’s 200m breaststroke category, and Olivier Ohm, who won bronze on Monday, was again back in the thick of things yesterday when he claimed another bronze in the men’s freestyle category.

Namibia’s silver medal in the 100m freestyle mixed relay came from the quartet of Trisha Mutumbulwa, Nicole Redecker, Brave Mugongo and Olivier Ohm, who put up a great show to finish behind South Africa, who won the gold. Bronze was won by Zimbabwe.

In other results, Namibia’s Lourenzo Danster and Johannes Swartz defeated South Africa by 6/4 7/5 to advance to the next stage of the men’s tennis doubles. In the singles, Albertus Brinkmann lost to Badza Benedict of Zimbabwe by 1/6 1/6, while Johannes Swartz fell short to Lesotho’s Khetisa Kamahelo of Lesotho by 4/6 1/6 3/6.

In boxing, Namibia was unfortunate as Martin ya Ilweni lost to Siseko Teyise of South Africa.
