In what can be described as one of the most exciting title races in years, Namibia’s oldest football club, Tigers, are on cloud nine and – barring unforeseen circumstances – look set to claim their first league crown in three decades.
The MTC Premiership has been turned into a two-horse race between rivals African Stars and Black Africa over the last couple of seasons, but Tigers seem to have had enough of living in the shadows of their more illustrious neighbours.
With multiple title-winning coach, Brian Isaacs, at the helm the Shadumbala Boys surprised friend and foe with a smooth brand of football that has triggered a notable increase at the turnstiles of late. Despite having won most of their encounters with marginal scores, Tigers’ inconsistency appears to have been arrested, as Ingwe remains the only unbeaten side after 15 rounds of matches – certainly a remarkable feat.
They now lead the log with six points, tailed by Black Africa, with Orlando Pirates breathing down their necks, while defending champions African Stars have fallen by the wayside following a string of poor results.
Many football pundits still believe it’s not over until the fat lady sings, and that fat lady is none other than the invincible Buccaneers.
“There is no pressure on us to win the league title, but it is within reach and we will take it game by game, as long as we maintain consistency… With the current squad at our disposal, we are confident to ground out decent results in the second round and move up the ladder,’ says the Ghosts’ Riaan Cloete. On the other hand, four times league champions BA remain serious title contenders.
