The manager of the Rundu fresh produce business hub, Gervasius Thikusho, has encourged consumers to buy its organic produce.
Apart from being a healthy alternative the locally farmed fresh produce is readily available at small traders and bulk buyers, who in turn sell the produce to consumers.
“Most of the produce come from local green scheme projects, including government- owned, but also from private farmers who ventured into supplying the hub with the produce,” Thikusho told New Era.
“We are encouraging everyone to make use of this facility. Come and see what produce is being consumed and produced locally.”
The fresh produce is sourced from the two Kavango regions.
“This is basically a one-stop centre for consumers and farmers,” Thikusho said.
The hub organises a fresh produce promotion day yearly to promote produce like potatoes, cabbages, tomatoes, butternuts and green peppers, just to name a few. This year’s fresh produce promotion day will be held at the hub on Monday and consumers can get a taste of the locally produced vegetables.
“We are also encouraging every farmer to supply us with fresh produce to be able to put it out there for them through the fresh produce hub here in Rundu. We do advise farmers on what to produce based on market demand,” said Thikusho.
Apart from sourcing fresh produce from farmers, the hub also trains small-scale farmers on good agricultural practice to ensure there is good produce. The hub further links small-scale farmers to agents who sell the produce.
