Lung sickness vaccination starts in Kavango West

RUNDU - The directorate of veterinary services has started vaccinating livestock against the outbreak of the Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia, commonly known as lung sickness, which was detected in Kavango West region since February.

The affected constituencies are Musese, Mankumpi, Ncamagoro and Kapako.

“We have started today (Monday) at Erago, Sau, Gcangcu and Hema villages and from tomorrow we will move to the next scheduled villages,” said an official from the ministry of agriculture, Kristian Haufiku.

The authorities are expected to vaccinate cattle in close to 80 villages within the four affected constituencies.

The vaccination team is expected to finish on 22 June.

There are about four teams comprising five officials going from point to point around the four affected constituencies.

Farmers are urged to take their cattle to crush pens for vaccination.

“Our officials have been inviting farmers to bring their livestock to various vaccination points,’’ said Jona Musheko, spokesperson of the agriculture ministry.

“Movement restrictions that were put in place as per the Veterinary Public Notification No. 4 of 2022 are still in place, and the public will be informed once such restrictions are reviewed,’’ Musheko said.

Lung sickness has been terrorising cattle in the above mentioned constituencies since the beginning of the year.
