Nored probes electrocution incident

ONGWEDIVA – An investigation has been launched into an electrocution of a six-year-old boy in Oshikoto region, who died last week.

Abel Nghishiko from Iimanya village allegedly died from an electric shock when he attempted to step over the collapsed electrical pole last week.

According to the police report, Nghishiko was playing with a wheelbarrow in the Omahangu field with two other children. While stepping over the electrical pole, he got electrocuted and died on the spot.

Omuntele constituency councillor, Sackeus Nangula said there was a strong wind prior to the day of the accident which caused the electrical pole to break down.

He then informed Nored officials to go attend to the matter, however, the officials only attended to another broken pole in the same area.

“I do not know what was the delay or what exactly happened, for them to only attend to another pole leaving that one unattended. Moments later, I was told that a boy got electrocuted,” he told New Era.

Approached for a comment, Nored spokesperson Simon Lukas said the incident is being investigated.

“At this difficulty moment, Nored wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family for the loss of their beloved son,” he said.

Lukas said the institution continues to create awareness and educate communities on the danger associated with electricity, especially during the rainy season which is highly associated with natural disasters such as strong winds which normally break down the electrical infrastructure.
