NUDOYL congress set for fierce contest

The National Unity Democratic Organisation Youth League’s elective conference is finally set to take place this weekend after postponements due to internal squabbles.

The two-day conference, which is expected to experience fierce contestation after more members have raised their hands to be elected into leadership positions, is expected to take place in Windhoek at the Shalom Centre tomorrow and Sunday. NUDOYL acting secretary-general Veparura Kandirikirira told New Era yesterday that the national executive committee of the youth league appointed an organising committee of 11 members to execute their mandate, whereby the secretary-general’s office of the youth league is a member.

Kandirikirira said the congress is expected to be graced by 120 delegates from the country’s 14 regions.

“This congress will not only elect new leadership, but will amend our constitution, and we will modernise it to guide us into a transformed wing. Furthermore, we have drafted an action plan which will be discussed and amended by the congress before approval,” he noted.

The action plan will consist of activities and a programme of action that the new leadership will be expected to execute and report back to the central committee of the youth league every year. “This action plan will equally consist of our position on youth matters. We are not only going to elect, but we will pave the way for a better NUDO for 2024 elections, more especially the role that we have to play as the youth of NUDO for the party to attract young voters,” said the youthful Kandirikirira.

The congress’ organising committee has been in the field since January, doing restructuring of the branches to ensure that there’s transparency in the process.

On the issues of candidature for positions, Kandirikirira stated that the party constitution is clear that nominations should be done on the floor during the congress.

The congress will elect eight top officials and 20 members of the national council (central committee).

“We have a youth league executive committee resolution that states clearly on the slates’ issue, and that we will not tolerate slates. Any members who attempt that will be brought before a DC,” he stressed. “We shouldn’t be misquoted. We are not prohibiting individuals from running for positions, but they shouldn’t group themselves,” he added.

Besides the amendments to the constitution and the action plan, Kandirikirira said the organisational report will equally be tabled by himself, which will highlight all the work of the youth league since the last congress.

Party president Utjiua Muinjangue is expected to open the conference. The last NUDOYL congress was held in 2013 in Okakarara, Otjozondjupa region.
