Nujoma mourns Elliot Hiskia

Minister of labour Utoni Nujoma has expressed deep sadness over the passing of prominent businessman and farmer Elliot Hiskia, who died last week Friday aged 74. He died in Windhoek due to Covid-19 complications.

Hiskia was a well-known farmer in the Omaheke region at Mooiplaas, some 90km east of Gobabis. He was also a prominent businessman and Swapo’s Omaheke regional treasurer.

He was laid to rest yesterday in Windhoek.

Describing him as a brilliant soccer player during his heydays, Nujoma said Uncle Hampau or Boetie Hampau as he was known among his peers, found so much pride in his accomplishments, both as a successful farmer in the Omaheke region and a businessman.

“His hard work, sense of humour, intelligence and love for people contributed to all his great achievements. Even though he faced some physical challenges, he defied all odds and forged ahead with unlimited resolve to succeed,” he added.

Nujoma said due to the friendship between his parents and Hiskia’s parents, Meekulu Guunona and Tatekulu Israel Hiskia became his godparents.

“When most of his contemporaries and some of us who were born after him in Old Location left the country to join the liberation struggle, Uncle Hampau decided to remain in the country to fight internally, where he continued to play a role as a Swapo political activist and served as an underground operator of Swapo,” he noted.

Nujoma said Hiskia, together with his peers the likes of Tives Mbako, Frans Kambangula, Aron Mushimba and many others were instrumental in the establishment of internal Swapo structures inside the country.

After independence, Hiskia continued to serve the Swapo party in many different capacities.

“On a personal note, I feel honoured and blessed to have had an uncle of that calibre, as he was truly a great mentor in my life. From his late evening calls to say hi, to his pass-by on his way from the farm to drop off some goodies, we will miss him dearly,” the minister said.

“To the children and the entire family, our father, uncle and great pillar of wisdom has done his part and has accomplished his mission,” he observed, saying it is now upon them to continue where the deceased had left off with discipline and hard work to ensure the continuation of his rich legacy, and to guarantee that all his countless teachings were not in vain.”
