Shivute orders police to serve people

OMUTHIYA - Oshikoto police commander Armas Shivute has implored police officers to work hard and never turn away people seeking help, while further reminding them that they are law enforcers and not social workers.

“Remember you are police officers and not social workers, so you have no business in sending anyone back when coming to report any crime. You cannot send back someone who came to report domestic abuse, your duty is to protect and serve with professionalism and compassion at all times,” stated Shivute at the commemoration of the 31st National Police Day in Omuthiya.

“I want to thank you all for rendering effective services at police stations especially to victims of domestic and gender-based violence. You are encouraged to continue improving your responses to crime, also investigate the cases thoroughly and leave no stone unturned in bringing perpetrators to book,” he added.

In the same vein, Shivute gave his assurance to never let the workforce down by addressing their needs to maintain their day-to-day performance.

He also encourages the community to be involved in combating crimes by reporting all criminal activities.

Covid

In as much as he appreciates his workforce and the tasks they have carried out, Shivute is touched by the loss of lives of some members who succumbed due to Covid-19. To date, he said, seven of the members died as a result of Covid-19 complications.

“The reality is that pain goes beyond numbers, as it cuts deep when we see empty desks in workplaces, reduced numbers of parades as well as a severe shortage in our police stations.

Therefore, even if there is fewer of us gathered here to commemorate our fallen officers, that small number should not diminish the gravity of our collective pain and loss, but ever remain united and resolute to work,” said Shivute.
