Draped in distinctive bright Indian garments, 12 Namibian models proudly walked down the runway, showcasing the diversity of Indian fashion, its distinctive fabrics, and unique cuts and silhouettes.

This unique India-Namibia collaboration was presented in a fashion show as part of a reception that marked India’s 73rd Republic Day on Monday.

Despite the pouring rain, the models illuminated the runway with elegance and poise in these impressive ensembles.

They included Miss Teen 2021 Alexis Swart, captain of the Eagles cricket team Gerhard Erasmus and teammate Helao ya France, Miss Namibia 2018 Selma Kamanya, as well as Miss Namibia 2019 Nadja Breytenbach.  An excited Swart and Erasmus closed the runway show, wearing ‘dulhan’ and ‘dulha’, traditional Indian wedding outfits for brides and grooms.  Designer Babita Khare from Descher Garments told VIBEZ! the idea behind the fashion show was to introduce Namibia to Indian culture and the craftsmanship that goes into making their traditional garments. 

“We have a garment factory in Windhoek, and everything was handmade there,” she said. 

The 12 garments each showcased the intricacies of design and embellishment with the finest, high-quality luxurious fabrics. 

Khare said 10 of the garments represent different states in India.  “The last two (‘dulhan’ and ‘dulha’) were the showstoppers, showcasing ensembles influenced by the age-old traditions and ancient folklore of India through wedding outfits.” 

The material for the ‘dulhan’ and ‘dulha’ were sourced from India, but the designing, pattern-making and sewing were done here. Spouses of the Indian High Commission staff also contributed to the fashion show by sponsoring some of the sarees. Beaming with pride, Khare said she looks forward to more projects like these that incorporate the India-Namibia partnership. - enuukala@nepc.com.na
