2015-03-20Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK – The swearing-in ceremony for 104 MPs will take place today in the National Assembly (NA). At the occasion the 104 MPs of the Sixth Parliament will take the oath of office and soon thereafter elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the NA among themselves. Spokesman for the NA, David Nahogandja, made the announcement in a press statement on Wednesday. The last session of the Fifth Parliament ended on Thursday afternoon after it dealt with a raft of important legislation. Among the last issues were a report on rhino poaching, and the Namibian Citizenship (Second) Special Conferment Bill. The Fifth Parliament passed 79 bills and tabled 27 motions and numerous reports that were deliberated on. Valuable recommendations were made to Cabinet for the purposes of improved service delivery and better administration of the state. Meanwhile, an induction programme for the new MPs is scheduled for next week Monday, which is aimed at introducing to, and providing, members with an overview of the workings of the august House. MPs will also receive an outline of the expectations placed on them. Due to the Third Amendment made to Namibia’s Constitution during the Fifth Parliament last year the NA increased its seats for MPs from 78 to 104. – Nampa 2015-03-20Staff Report 2
