48 killed in gender-related violence in 2015
Ongwediva Shocking statistics revealed that the Namibian police recorded 48 murder cases involving domestic relations between January and December last year. Last year New Era carried a story that showed that 25 women were killed in 2013. Twelve people were killed in gender-based violence between January and February alone in 2014. Seven of the killings were reported in January, while five were reported in February. Inspector Slogan Matheus of the Police Public Relations Department said statistics for the first two months of the year were not available as they were still being compiled. Erongo Region leads with the highest number of murders in the country with eight cases, followed by Kavango East and Omusati Region with seven each. Hardap, //Karas, Omaheke and Oshana regions have each reported two cases of gender-based killings. The police strongly believe most of the perpetrators committed the acts while they were under the influence of an addictive substance or alcohol. Most of the crimes were committed by use of a firearm or another weapon. “The cases involve murder by administering a poisonous substance where a domestic relationship and alcohol were involved; or murder with a firearm by means of domestic violence where alcohol was involved,” said Matheus. The most recent such killing was in Rehoboth where a man stabbed his wife to death and poisoned himself with a blue poisonous substance. Just recently, the constituency councillor of Okalongo Laurentius Iipinge also proposed to government to introduce dating contracts. The said motion was received with mixed feelings and was highly criticised and condemned on social media. Iipinge reckoned that with dating contracts in place such gruesome killings will be reduced. The Namibia Statistic Agency indicated that according to the 2011 Population and Housing Census over 90 000 Namibians are cohabitating.
