Take a 5-minute shower, Gazza
WINDHOEK The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) here has teamed up with Gazza to challenge Namibians to take a shorter shower that is under five minutes in order to save water. The #ShorterShower Challenge is part of a larger social media campaign aimed at generating awareness of World Water Day and advocacy for the importance of saving water. The #ShorterShower Challenge encourages people to shower under five minutes in an effort to save water. To help keep the shower short, Gazza has challenged his fans to finish showering before one of his songs finishes playing. “I have seen the impact of the drought, and it is time for people to make a change. Let’s save water, Namibia. Join in the Challenge,” Gazza says. According to Water Wise, a non-profit organisation that promotes water efficiency in Europe, the average 8 minute shower uses 62 litres of water. This means that roughly 8 litres of water are used per minute in the shower. By taking an under five minute shower, people can lessen their water consumption by about 23 litres. Anthea Basson, the National Information Officer for UNIC Windhoek, says: “World Water Day, which is celebrated each year on March 22, is a very pertinent observance, especially for Namibia. The day falls in line with Goal Number 6 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which is to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.” With the world diving deep into the digital age, Gazza comments on the power of social media in bringing about change.“Through social media, I am able to interact with my fans on a day to day basis. My fans have been very excited and supportive of the #ShorterShower Challenge and have posted promising to save water.” Gazza, who has over 50,000 followers on Instagram, nearly 52,000 likes on Facebook and a combined 15,000 Twitter followers over two accounts, has reached out to his large fan base to generate awareness on this pressing issue. Since the drought continues to ravage the nation, UNIC Windhoek and Gazza continue to challenge the public to take a #ShorterShower. While jamming along to My Boeta and My People you will have fun saving water, so take the Challenge!
