A 57-year-old man was found lying dead next to a 9mm pistol that he is believed to have used to shoot himself in Rundu’s Tutungeni location.

The suspected suicide is thought to have taken place on Wednesday at an unknown time.

Police suspect the deceased who was identified as Janse van Rensburg Willem Sternberg, 57, a resident of Tutungeni, shot himself in the head inside his house using the 9mm pistol.

He is said to have been staying alone.

“A colleague of the deceased visited his house this evening after realising he had not been seen since the previous day and discovered his lifeless body lying on a mattress in the corridor with a pistol in his hand. He thereafter alerted the police and our members attended to the report,” said Detective Chief Inspector Ewald Kavara at the Kavango East police headquarters in Rundu.

The deceased had complained of fever and this had concerned his colleague who went to his house to find out what was happening, said Kavara.

Police are also investigating to see if there was any possible foul play.

“His body was taken to the Rundu state hospital mortuary,” said Kavara.
