2016-04-13Staff Report 2 Windhoek A total of 90 commissioned and non-commissioned police officers graduated from Pius Joseph Kaundu Police Training Centre in Omaheke after receiving extensive three-month training in the Constitution, skills at arms and physical fitness, among others. The training was specifically tailored to incorporate already serving members of the force, who were either included from the civilian component, or those who joined to serve at various portfolios within the structure of the police. As new members, the trainees were introduced to the basics of policing, thus contributing to the police force’s aim of having skilled and competent staff in its employ. Police inspector general Sebastian Ndeitunga stressed that during the three-month programme, the officers were trained in the Criminal Procedure Act, Common Law crimes, Judges’ Rules, the Police Act, ethics, community policing, crime prevention and customer care. The graduates were also taught how to take statements and to complete registers. Ndeitunga said although the duration of the course was short, graduates must improve and increase their knowledge by reading and educating themselves on all relevant aspects of policing. “Policing as a profession is not an easy task. It encompasses massive challenges that require all of you to have an in-depth understanding of various laws of this land, including the creation of good cooperation with the society you are serving,” said Ndeitunga. He warned that the officers will have to deal with elements in the society, who at times may pose serious danger to the lives of other people: “You will also be required to render professional assistance to victims of crime.” He further spoke about President Hage Geingob’s crime prevention campaign, Operation Omake, which is aimed at clearing bushes and riverbeds suspected of being used as hideouts by criminals. “You will be directed from time to time to join your fellow colleagues in carrying out crime prevention operations, so as to directly contribute to the realisation of the primary mandate of the police,” stated the police chief. 2016-04-13Staff Report 2
