2006-02-03Staff Report 2 "By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK Executive members of the newly established American/Namibian Alumni on Tuesday met for the first time to discuss its future plans and how they can get involved in the country's development at various levels. The organization, established in September last year, comprises more than 200 Namibian post-graduates who have over the years studied in the United States. ""The Namibian/American Alumni has as its main aims and objectives to promote the existing cordial relationships between our two countries as a priority. I consider the organization a qualified source that can help and assist in the development efforts of Namibia. In this regard, we intend cooperating with the Government on all levels,"" said Professor Tangeni Iiyambo, chairperson of the society. ""The alumni intents getting involved in the promotion of democracy, good governance, education, economic growth and the fight against HIV/AIDS. A conference, to which most members have already confirmed participation on February 17, will determine the road ahead for the alumni,"" said Stanley Harsha, director of the American Cultural Center in introducing the plans of the organization. Among those Namibians who have studied in America either under the Fulbright Program for post-graduate study and the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship or on their own costs, are Prime Minister Nahas Angula, Hage Geingob, Nangolo Mbumba, Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana and Joseph Diescho. ""The executive committee expects that the pool of qualified members of our organization will come up with ideas and plans for development. We can make a difference and we expect the Government to lend an ear to suggestions and proposals in our striving to improve the country and the rest of the world,"" said Professor Iiyambo, a lecturer in education at the University of Namibia. The organization's first conference will be held on February 17 at the library of the Polytechnic of Namibia.
