Agra launches weaner competition
Windhoek A large number of animals were marketed at Agra’s weaner auctions last year, as well as commercial auctions and the same trend is expected on the eve of Agra’s launch of its annual weaner competition in Windhoek tomorrow. Last year the auctions sold a peak number of 7 300 animals in the first week of August. Weaner auctions that stood out include the Mariental auction that sold 1 397 cattle at their weaner auction in August, a record number of cattle for this auction point. The Otjiwarongo weaner auction sold the most weaners for the season (2 454 cattle), followed by Grootfontein, where 2 019 heads of cattle were sold. Auction points in the South sell increasing numbers of large stock. At the weaner auction in Keetmanshoop last August 798 cattle sold, while Samehaling sold 611 cattle at their weaner auction. A great number of weaner calves are expected to be entered for the weaner calf competition to be hosted at all weaner auctions and producers have to enter lots of 15 calves to participate. Calves are judged according to a set of criteria in the categories of feedlot potential, veld potential and heifers. All the winners at the different auctions will be in the running for the awards of regional champions and a national champion that will be announced and awarded at a function in October. The weaner competition has been made possible by the involvement of sponsors, who contributed to the prizes for the winners at the auctions, as well as for the hosting of the championship award ceremony. Last year, the main sponsors were Feedmaster, who provided the expertise for the judging the weaners, FNB and Sanlam and Santam, with co-sponsors Nictus, MSD, AMH, Marsh, Bayer, Virbac, Indongo Toyota and Henco Engineering.
