2013-10-18Staff Report 2 …despite awful weatherWINDHOEK - Two-time Namibian Olympic shottist Gaby Ahrens underlined why she is the best in Namibia, when she secured overall 4th place at the Western Province Olympic Trap Championships in Cape Town last weekend. Ahrens (32) was the only female competitor from a field of 14 participants, but nevertheless showed great composure and character in the opening round despite unfamiliar windy and rainy conditions, booking herself a place in the top 6 finishers going into the final round. Ahrens just missed out on the final with one shot and had to compete for the bronze medal against Francois Jooste of Botswana with only one clay pigeon less than her opponent, which sealed her fate. “I’m happy with the result as I am not used to these conditions. I want to try and compete more in Cape Town, because the weather is similar to that of Glasgow, Scotland host city of next year’s Commonwealth Games,” Ahrens said. South African champion Tobie de Wet from Pretoria eventually went on to win the event with Cape Town-based Richard Thompson finishing 2nd overall in the final standings. In the meantime, giant local retailers Wecke & Voigts has teamed up with Ahrens and agreed a sponsorship deal for the next three years running up to the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
