Amathila comes to aid of Kunene teachers

Cecilia Xavier

OTJOMURU – The community of Otjomuru has expressed gratitude after the local school received an additional teacher’s accommodation facility, courtesy of veteran politician Dr Libertina Amathila, last week Friday.

The much-needed accommodation was constructed at a cost of over N$300 000, consisting of two teachers’ flats.

The flats are to accommodate the newly appointed teachers for grade 8.

Government has constructed two quarters for teachers and is yet to build additional homes to accommodate the remaining teachers accommodated in corrugated iron sheet, while and some staff members share a shack.

This condition was described as not conducive for teachers by school principal Anna Tjazapi.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Amathila said she decided to help the school to improve the livelihood as well as improve service delivery to the marginalised communities.

She also called on all stakeholders in the education fraternity to engage in the search of possible resolutions to the challenges facing schools.  Amathila highlighted that the condition of the teachers’ accommodation in most rural areas remains a challenge and it has a greater negative impact on the education of learners.

This is not the first time Amathila is donating to Otjomuru Combined School and the Otjomuru village.

She has in the past also constructed a health centre, a hostel block for both boys and girls, as well as a dining hall.

Otjomuru Combined School is situated in one of the marginalised villages in Kunene.

The school has a population of 10 teachers and over 300 learners from surrounding villages.
