Angolan inmate escapes from custody at Ndiyona…flees into Angola

RUNDU – A 27-year-old Angolan inmate escaped from the Ndiyona Police station in Kavango East on Thursday after he was taken out of the holding cells to clean the police station premises.

According to the police, Renade Jao Vesta and other inmates were under the watch of female police officer when he made a run for it. It is believed he might have crossed the nearby Kavango River into Angola. Vesta was recently sentenced by the Ndiyona periodic court to 18 months imprisonment with an option of N$ 4000 fine for contravening the immigration control act. He was held at the Ndiyona police holding cells because he could not pay the fine.

“The incident happened on Thursday at 11h45 at the Ndiyona Police station, Ndiyona district. The suspect escaped after he was booked on camp duty,” said the Kavango East crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Police Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu, who confirmed the incident to New Era.
