All movement of livestock within, into and out of the belt area south of the Red line has been suspended until further notice effective from the announcement by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry on May 26. During this period an intensive round of livestock inspections will be conducted in the belt area and farmers will be advised accordingly by the respective State veterinarians of their areas when their farms will be visited.

After the completion of this period livestock destined for slaughter will only be allowed to move with a Red Cross permit to the destined abattoir. Livestock destined for auctions will have to spend 21 days in quarantine before these animals may be traded.

FMD normally does not infect humans, but animals are severely affected and high mortalities occur, especially among younger animals.  Animals develop a high fever sores (blisters) appear on the lips, tongue, teats and hoofs.
