2006-04-07Staff Report 2 By Ashley Zolkov THE College of the Arts will present its annual Arts Academy in Keetmanshoop from Monday to Wednesday at the Multi Purpose Youth Centre. Courses offered include Keyboard, Brass instruments, e.g. Trumpet, Trombone and Tuba, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Percussion, Choral Singing, Saxophone and Visual Art. The College of the Arts has recognised that most churches and schools in Namibia desperately need people who can read music, play an instrument, lead services with music or train and lead choirs. In an effort to provide tuition programmes for choir leaders and instrumentalists, we have developed and successfully presented an Arts Academy every year since 1994. It is an ongoing effort to promote and advance arts education at the regional level. The programme has since become an important highlight on the college calendar. Previous course-goers have attended from all over Namibia and have come from diverse cultures and religious backgrounds. Others have simply attended for their love of music as well as achieving personal goals. The three-day course will be presented by 12 lecturers of the College of the Arts. Registration is at 09h00 on Monday. The official opening by mayor Thibolt of Keetmanshoop as well as Mr Sebastien Lanoye takes place on Tuesday at 09h00. Course-goers receive a certificate of attendance. The cost is only N$20. Course participants are requested to make their own arrangements concerning accommodation. Participants studying a music instrument are requested to bring the instrument if they have one. Through this academy the College of the Arts hopes to successfully promote the different art forms, to develop and upgrade skills in the arts, to provide the necessary materials for art study, as well as to identify new talents that can further be trained at the College of the Arts through its regular training programmes.
